Acu-Current Therapy Overview
Why Does Acu-Current Therapy Work?
Acu-Current Therapy works by quickly releasing fascia, muscle, joint and rib restrictions at specific points on the body providing immediate relief of pain and increased range of movement.
This is accompanied by patient self/home care that is designed to maintain and even increase the benefits gained during treatment(s).

During & Between Treatment Sessions
What Happens During Acu-Current Therapy To Treat Pain Conditions
Acu-Current Therapy treatments loosen the tightness/adhesion in the myofascia to release restrictions in joint motion, correct posture imbalances, and most importantly - provide real time pain relief.
Acu-Current's patient self/home-care instructions and activities strengthen weak muscles, increase long-term pain relief and change posture compensations.

During Treatment Sessions
During Acu-Current Therapy treatment sessions, practitioners strategically target new acupuncture points in muscles and fascia with the Pointoselect device.
At the same time, Acu-Current Therapy has the patient stretch the area, while the practitioner applies a myofascial acupressure stretch.
Resulting Changes For Patient
Releases Restrictions On Joints
This combination therapy loosens the tightness/adhesion in the myofascia to release restrictions in joint motion and corrects posture imbalance.
Significant Pain Relief
In the process, Acu-Current Therapy treatments increase local circulation, stimulate endorphin release and relieves pain.
Between Treatment Sessions
After Acu-Current Therapy treatment, the muscles are still weak. To correct this, the patient must participate in their healing process by not re-tightening the muscles, keeping the muscles loose and SLOWLY strengthening the muscles.
Acu-Current Therapy's home care strengthens weak muscles, increases long-term relief and changes posture compensations.
How It Helps Patient
Patient learns to avoid aggravating condition
Ergonomics. Not over-doing. Doing less of anything that makes it worse. It is important to find out what makes it worse – activities, positions
Patient learns how to help maintain improvement
Correct Posture. Stretches (Posture Qigong to facilitate posture change). Doing more of anything that makes it better. It is important to find out what makes it better – heat/cold, self-massage, positions, particular stretches

Why Acu-Current Therapy is So Effective
Acu-Current Therapy Treats The Root Causes of Most Pain Conditions
How does treating points, muscles, tendons and fascia help pain conditions heal?
By treating the root causes of most pain conditions: tight muscles, restrictions in related joints and posture imbalances.
Here is a brief overview of what goes on in the body to create the type of pain conditions Acu-Current Therapy was developed to treat:

How Joint Restrictions and Posture Imbalances Develop Initially
Repeating the same activity over and over (repetitive strain) and acute trauma cause muscles to over-stretch.
To prevent damage and muscle tears, the body glues muscle fibers and fascia together to thicken and protect the muscle.
If we press on this area, it feels like a tight knot or band in the muscle.
To further protect the muscle, it contracts and shortens.
Results of Shortened Muscles
Pulls On The Related Joint Tendon
As the muscle shortens, it pulls on the related joint through it’s tendon attachment and over-stretches it.
Body Reacts to Protect Tendon
To prevent damage and tendon tears, the body glues fascia together with muscle and tendon fibers to thicken and protect the tendon attachment.
Body Reacts to Protect Ligaments
This also happens to the ligaments that connect parts of the joint.
Joint’s Movement Restricted
As the shortened muscle and tendon pulls on a part of the related joint, the joint’s ability to move correctly is restricted.
Posture Imbalance Develops
We can no longer use that part of our body in ways that are needed and we develop a posture imbalance.
Posture Imbalance Becomes Fixed
As the glued or adhesed muscles and tendons remain in place, the restricted motion and the posture imbalance become locked into place.
Over Time, Tight and Weakened Muscles Lead to Fixed Posture Imbalances
The normal action of muscles is to contract. When muscles are shortened to their maximum and keep trying to contract, they are unable to contract. Instead, they weaken.
The end result is a fixed posture imbalance that becomes the new normal posture.
The "New" Normal Posture
Tight, Weak Muscles
Muscles are tight, shortened and weak with adhesed knots and bands. Opposing muscles are tight, lengthened and weak.
Adhesed Tendons
Tendons are adhesed to surrounding muscles and joints.
Reduced Range Of Motion
Joints are restricted with reduced range of motion

Familiar Example Situation
One common example is what happens to the body when working at a desk or computer.
Often, people will round their shoulders, with their neck positioned too far forward.
How Pain Condition Develops
Neck Muscles Tighten, Pull On Spine
After prolonged hours in this incorrect position, neck muscles tighten and pull on the spine in the neck region.
"Fixed" Posture Imbalance Develop
After a while, the incorrect posture — in this case, the neck being positioned too far forward with rounded shoulders — becomes frozen.
Serious Pain Conditions Develop
Eventually, nerves can get compressed and discs can bulge or herniate.
Resulting Pain Conditions
Tight muscles caused by poor posture, injury, or repeated motion can cause chronic and acute pain and an array of other negative health effects.
This can lead to muscle inflammation, joint strain and deterioration, spinal disc injury, predisposition to ligament tears and degenerative arthritis.
Things Get Worse Over Time
Damage To Vascular System
The tightness in the muscle puts physical pressure on blood vessels resulting in poor blood circulation, an insufficient supply of nutrients and oxygen being delivered to the injured muscles and a build-up of metabolic toxins such as lactic acid.
Further Injury
Over a period of time, this results in injury and inflammation to tendons, joints, discs and much more.

Tight Muscles, Joint Restrictions and Posture Imbalances
Examples Of Common Pain Conditions
Here are some of the most common pain conditions that Acu-Current Therapy can significantly improve. All these pain conditions are driven by tight muscles caused by poor posture, injury, or repeated motion.

Tendonitis
Chronically shortened muscles exert a continual pull on related tendons and put stress on the tendon’s attachment to the joint causing inflammation of the tendon.

Disc Degeneration
Shortened paraspinal muscles can compress spinal discs causing disc degeneration, bulging, herniation and arthritis.

Arthritis or Tears
Increased pressure on the surfaces of the knee joint can cause arthritis or tears in ligaments or the meniscus.

And Many Others…
This can also lead to other conditions including frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis or plantar fasciitis, as well as internal conditions including asthma, GERD, headaches, and TMJ.

How Acu-Current Therapy Works
Acu-Current Therapy treatment sessions involve a combination of electrostimulation, new acupuncture points (in the fascia around muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints), myofascial acupressure stretches, and stretch positions for the patient.
This is accompanied by patient self/home-care instructions and activities after/between treatment sessions.
What Does Acu-Current Therapy Treat?
Acu-Current Therapy is effective for treating a wide range of pain conditions including both acute and chronic pain (musculo-skeletal, neurological, visceral).
It is frequently used to treat arthritis, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, sinusitis, respiratory problems, gastrointestinal problems and gynecological issues.
How Acu-Current Therapy Was Developed
The Acu-Current method was developed by Dr. Malvin Finkelstein over his 40-year career as an acupuncturist and oriental medicine doctor.
It synthesizes techniques and theory drawn from acupuncture and Oriental medicine; acupressure methods including shiatsu, tuina; qigong; the bodywork of Lauren Berry, PT; osteopathy; and electrostimulation treatment.
