Acu-Current Therapy Overview
How Does Acu-Current Therapy Work?
Acu-Current Therapy treatments release tight muscles, restrictions in the joints, and muscle adhesions using a gentle electrical microcurrent.
Acu-Current Therapy does this through a combination of specific points in the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia, a hand-held and highly effective microcurrent device, body positioning, acupressure stretch techniques, and patient education on self-care between/after treatment to obtain long-term results.

Acu-Current Therapy In Practice
Acu-Current Therapy treatment sessions involve a combination of micro-current electricity, new acupuncture points (in the fascia around muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints), myofascial acupressure stretches, and stretch positions for the patient. This is accompanied by patient self/home-care between sessions.

During Acu-Current Treatment Sessions
The point release at specific acupuncture points with the Dolphin Neurostim, Acupressure Stretch and Stretch Position are all done at the same time.
The combination of the four are the key to release of each area and to Acu-Current’s effectiveness.
Achieving Point Release
Microcurrent Applied While Point Area Is Stretched
The Acu-Current Therapy method uses the Dolphin micro-current device at precise angles to reach the tightest part of the adhesed fascia. This is facilitated by treating in a "stretched position" - a combination of the stretch done by the patient and the myofascial acupressure stretch done by the practitioner.
Stretch Increased and Angle Of Microcurrent Application Adjusted
Once that releases, the myofascial stretch is increased and the Dolphin angle is changed to contact the next deeper layer of restricted fascia. The "stretched position" is maintained by patient and practitioner.
Continued Adjustments Until Point Release Achieved
This process continues until the muscle and joint are moving normally.
Between/After Treatment Sessions
Self-care between treatments is the final component of the Acu-Current method. Patient self-care is essential to prevent recurrence and to increase long-term benefits.
Self-Care
Not Over-doing activities and exercise
The first component of patient self-care is not over-doing. To avoid re-aggravating the condition, it is important to understand which activities and positions make the problem worse and how to modify or avoid them, while continuing to be active and functional.
Posture Qigong
Posture Qigong exercises are designed to correct the most common posture imbalances that get aggravated by daily activity and exercise. They stretch and gently strengthen at the same time
Ergonomic corrections
It is important to correct the body positions used in daily activities and exercise (ergonomics). Ergonomic suggestions are included in each Acu-Current section.

Learn How To Use Acu-Current Therapy
Whether you are working with patients who have not experienced relief with other treatments or you’re looking for a fast and effective way to release acupuncture points, myofascial adhesions and joint restrictions, Acu-Current Therapy is an ideal solution.
Acu-Current Therapy is a System of Treatment
The 5 Components of Acu-Current Therapy
Acu-Current Therapy’s effectiveness is based on the integration of five components – (1) new acupuncture points and locations, (2) use of the Dolphin microcurrent device, (3) myofascial acupressure stretches, (4) treating in stretch positions and (5) patient self/home care after/between treatment sessions.
1. New Acupuncture Points
Acu-Current Therapy points are in the fascia surrounding the tendons and ligaments around the joints, as well as the fascia surrounding muscles.
New acupuncture and trigger point locations correspond to joint spaces, tendon attachments to bone, as well as trigger and motor points. Some of these may be the original locations that have been lost through centuries of verbal transmission.
Each Acu-Current Therapy point releases restrictions in joint motion to restore normal range of motion.
Combining treatment of muscles with treatment of tendons, ligaments and joints is one of the unique features of Acu-Current Therapy.
Acu-Current points are either:

2. Dolphin Neurostim Micro-Current
The Dolphin Neurostim is a hand-held micro-current Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator (TENS) device. It is engineered to stimulate areas of low resistance on the body.

3. Myofascial Acupressure Stretch
A gentle manual stretch that separates adhesed fascia from muscles, tendons and ligaments to reposition muscles and joints into their correct position

4. Treating in a Stretch Position
Patients move gently into a position that replicates the initial injury. These positions are done with no pain. Some muscles are stretched; others are contracted.
Why Use a Stretch Position?
Problems begin when we bend, twist or extend our arms, legs, head or torso, not when we are standing or sitting with our arms by our sides. Overuse in these positions causes the body to tighten up and keep us in these positions. These positions become our new imbalanced posture.
By replicating the positions that we injured ourselves in, treatment done with the stretch release the area more completely. This provides quicker and longer lasting improvement.
Key Benefits of the Stretch Position

5. Home Care
Patients frequently notice improvement after treatment from a range of different therapies. Often this improvement doesn’t last. Acu-Current Therapy adds in what Dr. Finkelstein calls the “3-Legged Stool”. In addition to treatment to relieve the problem, it’s important to limit aggravating activities and increase beneficial activities. If a patient leaves out “1 leg of the stool”, “the stool falls over” – in other words – improvement lessens or disappears.
Self-care between treatments is the final component of the Acu-Current method. Patient self-care is essential to prevent recurrence and to increase long-term benefits.

Why Acu-Current Therapy Works?
Most pain conditions are caused by tight muscles, restrictions in related joints and posture imbalance.
Acu-Current Therapy treatments loosen tightness/adhesion in the fascia and acupuncture channels to release restrictions in joint motion; a process which increases local circulation, stimulates endorphin release and relieves pain.
What Does Acu-Current Therapy Treat?
Acu-Current Therapy is effective for treating a wide range of pain conditions including both acute and chronic pain (musculo-skeletal, neurological, visceral).
It is frequently used to treat arthritis, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, sinusitis, respiratory problems, gastrointestinal problems and gynecological issues.
How Acu-Current Therapy Was Developed
The Acu-Current method was developed by Dr. Malvin Finkelstein over his 40-year career as an acupuncturist and oriental medicine doctor.
It synthesizes techniques and theory drawn from acupuncture and Oriental medicine; acupressure methods including shiatsu, tuina; qigong; the bodywork of Lauren Berry, PT; osteopathy; and microcurrent electrical treatment.
